Who Dat Wednesday: TWN - Blue Sky District
Last week I had the pleasure of tracking down Voydd's own R&B youngin' TOWN for an interview before his highly anticipated album, Blue Sky District, drops on February 28th. I've been waiting on him to put out something new since last April when I heard his voice live for the first time. I will admit that it took a little time for me to come around to TOWN's sound. Now that I'm here I have to keep my seat at the head of fan club warm.
C: How long have you been making music?
TOWN: I've been making music since I was 17. In 2012 I released my first R&B mixtape titled Suitcase Dream. It was terrible. (laughs) I've progressed so much since then!
C: DON'T SAY THAT. I'm sure it wasn't that bad. Tell me a little more about Blue Sky District!
TOWN: The title embodies the familiar saying, "The sky is the limit." Yeah there's the sky but what's next? I want to take my progression to the next level and transcend the limit and ceilings that people try to place above me.
C: Wow that's amazing. When I listen to Blue Sky District, how will the music make me feel?
TOWN: I didn't have a theme in mind while I was making this project. The music is for a bunch of different moods. I want people to hear this and assess themselves in their journeys. When you hear Blue Sky District I want you to know where you are right now isn't the end.
C. You're getting really deep on me here. I love it. This is my favorite interview question: what's your idea of 'making it'?
TOWN: Easy, celebrities paying me to engineer their music. But let's be clear 'making it' is subjective. I want my hard work to put me in a comfortable position. I met a janitor once that worked at a school for 20 years. He worked his way up to the top of his position. He came to his job every day ecstatic because he made it!! It's all subjective.
C: That was such an inspirational story. Before you go can you let the readers in on a non-music related TOWN fact?
TOWN: Of course! I'm secretly a techie. Last year my PlayStation broke. I started looking up YouTube videos to figure out how to fix it. It's still not fully fixed yet but I plan on it! Extra fact: I'm really in to massage therapy. I want to go back to school for that soon.
Check out Blue Sky District!
